John Jacob "Jay" Berwanger (1914-2002) was an American collegiate football player and decathlete from Dubuque, Iowa. In 1935, playing for Chicago University, Berwanger was the first recipient of the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy which was renamed the Heisman Trophy the following year. He choose to forgo his path to the NFL so he could remain eligible as an amateur to compete for a spot on the 1936 U.S. Olympic team in the decathlon.
