Thomas Clement Douglas was born on October 20, 1904, in Falkirk, Scotland, and died on February 24, 1986, in Ottawa, Canada. He was a renowned Canadian politician, often called the "Father of Medicare," for his pivotal role in establishing universal healthcare in Canada. Serving as the seventh Premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961, Douglas led the first democratic socialist government in North America, introducing transformative social programs. Later, he became the first leader of the federal New Democratic Party (1961–1971). In 2004, he was voted "The Greatest Canadian" in a national poll for his contributions to social justice and reform.
